La Défense

La Défense has never been an ordinary site. The atypical design coupled with an international reputation has created its current status as the largest business district in Europe and a living example of the history of skyscrapers.

The Grande Arche de la Defense symbolizes the closing of the historical axis of Paris.Among the 424 presented projects the one from Otto von Spreckelsen was selected with his idea of closing the axis with an empty cube symbolizing an open future.

The CNIT by Bernard Zehrfuss, Robert Camelot and Jean de Mailly with a curtain wall by Jean Prouvé was a unique building of 1958. First built as an exhibition hall, it now houses the centre national d’industrie et de technologie.

Notre Dame de la Pentecôte.  This small building by Frank Hammoutene is built on the edge of the platform on the left side of the CNIT. An open façade of glass and marble leaves the ground floor free allowing natural light to come in.

Cœur Défense. The biggest tower of the site. The model of the 90s French skyscrapers, a massive building of 60.000 m2 including for the first time the concepts of an open space in the first 10 floors as a public exchange space.

Tour EDF by Pei, Cobb, Fred & Partners. This tower is a model of American skyscraper architecture in Paris based on a steel structure.
